Superfoodie

I unofficially joined the foodie culture when I moved to New York. I knew that there was great food here but I’d yet to discover the plethora of choices. On each visit I’d try something new and would feel like an unfaithful lover to my hometown L.A. Now that I’m a conscious organic shopper and a vegetarian, food and the taste of it takes on different meanings. I’m peculiar in how my food is presented and picky in a non-elitist way in how it tastes.

This city can rightly be called the capital of food aficionados. The restaurants, patisseries, bakeries and cute little shops perpetuate the love of cuisine and the dining experience. And, I say perpetuate on. One of my favorite columns to read is Grub Street from The New York magazine. It gives the intel on new restaurants, what’s in season and places that have shuttered. Its analysis is as expert I imagine as a presidential briefing I feel. This city lives by its reviews and listings. Perhaps its time I become a superfoodie? But not that kind of superfoodie, as in one that’s piggy backing off the foodie phenom.

A foodie is a person keenly interested in food, esp. in eating or cooking. So, I think I’m going to piggy back off of it and become a superfoodie. I recently read in article in MSN about superfoods. http://health.msn.com/nutrition/slideshow.aspx?cp-documentid=100168275&imageindex=10

I was happy to see that a few of these I already had in my diet – blueberries, beets and pumpkin seeds and dried prunes. The beets make a cameo more than any of them on the list. But, prunes come to a close second. On the other hand, I realized that there are other items on there like pomegranate juice and cinnamon that I had no idea were superfoods. While, the superfood purlane I’ve never even heard of before. Now that I know, I’m going to add them to my standard standard grocery list.

There you have it. My increasingly conscious self proclaims that I am now a superfoodie. I’m adding one of these ten to my diet every day. Yes, EVERY day. I attempted to add them to my diet this week and I met with great success: blueberries twice; pomegrante juice 3x and beets twice. I feel amazing! The thing too is I know it’s good for me and my running. So here’s my challenge to you. You might not be ready to become a superfoodie anytime soon. But I will crack a smile if you put your fall cape on storm the market for your usual suspects and then pick up one of these items too.
